Obama lets cheap oil go to China to pander to radical base

While Obama desperately tries to hide his record on the economy and  kowtows to fringe activists, China continues its  pursuit of a contract with Canada for Keystone pipeline oil.

In the midst of the “worst economic recovery America has ever had,” affordable domestic energy is more important than ever for both job creation and national security. In light of the circumstances, holding up a pipeline that would create thousands of jobs and has held strong against the weight of skeptics is completely nonsensical.

The potential of Canada’s oil being shipped to China rather than the US has set many of the staunchest pipeline opponents in Washington backpedaling for dear life as support for the pipeline among American voters is at an all-time high.

Consider:

The pipeline has withstood every environmental impact test it has been subjected to. “The State Department previously completed a three-year environmental review of Keystone XL that concluded with the release of a Final Environmental Impact Statement in August 2011. Experts project that the project will create over 18,000 construction and manufacturing jobs and generate investments of over $1.2 billion in the corridor states of Montana, South Dakota and Nebraska.” [“Keystone XL Receives Support from More than 100,000 Americans,” CEA Press Release, 07/30/2012.]

However, hurdles still remain. “So have all the challenges been met and can we close the books on this one? Not quite. There are three primary legs to the full route which are under scrutiny from both sides of the border, and each of them has a few wrinkles left in the fabric.” [Jazz Shaw, “Keystone XL moving forward…maybe,” Hot Air, 07/29/2012. http://tinyurl.com/dy6n4cm]

Activists are still seeking to blockade construction at every turn. “…This should have been a done deal by now, but the environmental groups are not going down without a fight. Lobbyists are already pressuring the government to expand the scope of the environmental review process significantly to “address indirect issues of climate change.” That language alone should be enough to tell you that if the government caves, it could drag on for decades of ‘research.’… Any concrete action will take time to get moving in full gear and there’s only about 100 days until the election. In the event that Barack Obama wins a second term, would he remain as “enthusiastic” about seeing the project move forward? Permits, once issues, may still be recalled if “new questions” arise or “further study” is deemed necessary.”” [Jazz Shaw, “Keystone XL moving forward…maybe,” Hot Air, 07/29/2012. http://tinyurl.com/dy6n4cm]

With signs of progress shrouded by questions, nothing has stopped China from trying to ink a deal with the Canadians, as was predicted after Barack Obama’s initial rejection of the pipeline. “When President Barack Obama blocked the Keystone Pipeline, Republicans said the move would encourage Canada to pursue oil deals with China instead of the United States and cede a massive chunk of North American oil assets to the communist nation.” [Wynton Hall, “Democrats backpedal as China readies $15.1 billion Canadian oil deal,” Breitbart, 07/28/2012. http://tinyurl.com/ckbd83e]

Now, not only are American jobs and overall energy independence at risk, but the very real potential of losing a vast amount of North American oil to a communist nation looms large. “…with China’s state-run oil company CNOOC poised to cut a $15.1 billion deal–the largest ever foreign acquisition for a Chinese company–with Canadian oil company Nexen, Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) and Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) are in full backpedal mode.” [Wynton Hall, “Democrats backpedal as China readies $15.1 billion Canadian oil deal,” Breitbart, 07/28/2012. http://tinyurl.com/ckbd83e]

Some of the strongest political opponents to Keystone XL in backpedal mode? “In a draft letter to the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), Sen. Schumer writes: I respectfully urge you, in your capacity as chairman of the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), to withhold approval of this transaction to ensure U.S. companies reciprocal treatment. Similarly, Rep. Pelosi is now sounding alarms of concern.  In a statement, Pelosi spokesperson Drew Hamill said: This deal prompts great concern about the Chinese government’s continued attempts to use its state-owned enterprises to acquire global energy resources.” [Wynton Hall, “Democrats backpedal as China readies $15.1 billion Canadian oil deal,” Breitbart, 07/28/2012. http://tinyurl.com/ckbd83e]

Glimmers of progress and backpedaling from opponents arrive in the wake of over 100,000 ordinary Americans signing a petition in support of construction of the Keystone XL pipeline. As China appears set to make its play, it is absolutely imperative that America act for the sake of jobs, energy independence and national security. “HOUSTON, TX: Consumer Energy Alliance (CEA) announced today that it submitted over 100,000 individual public comments calling on the U.S. Department of State to swiftly approve the Keystone XL pipeline.  The comments, which come from residents of nearly every U.S. state, urge the agency to examine only those environmental impact issues associated with the new route through Nebraska in its supplement review.” [“Keystone XL Receives Support from More than 100,000 Americans,” CEA Press Release, 07/30/2012.]
