There is one point, however, on which both foundationalists and progressives can agree: the 2012 election is one of enormous importance. Without question, its outcome will determine the future direction of the country, a reinvigoration of America’s foundationalism or a continuation of progressives’ administrative statism.

One demands the abolition of capitalism; it is a sign of anger and despair. The other brings us goodness and light.

Krueger’s resume includes advocating a value-added consumption (VAT) tax in addition to our dysfunctional income tax, directing economic policy at the Treasury from 2009-10, and creating the Small Business Lending Fund, a program modeled on the low-cost mortgage lending that produced the housing bubble. For an administration that claims to be searching for new policy options, bringing in Krueger seems to broadcast a reluctance to change.

My generation should be ashamed of what we have done to younger Americans. …. we have placed them in bondage to the most massive debts in world history. We have led these innocent lambs to a financial slaughterhouse.

Many of those on the extreme left oppose reforming Medicare for another reason entirely: they desire a state-run monopoly of healthcare. They prefer a socialized healthcare model. To attain that goal, the left needs to merely block reforms to Medicare. Gridlock and stalemate will assure Medicare’s eventual bankruptcy and therefore its subsequent nationalization (a la Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac).
