It’s no secret that the Russians do not want the United States or her allies to be protected by missile defense, and believe that New START forbids further development of missile defense.

The New START treaty, its protocols and annexes all limit U.S. missile defense options. Don’t just take our word for it. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says so too, insisting that “linkage to missile defense is clearly spelled out in the accord and is legally binding.”

The Framers’ wisdom is confirmed by Barack Obama’s impatience with senators reluctant to ratify, during Congress’s lame-duck session, the New START treaty pertaining to Russia’s nuclear weapons.

The media are pushing hard to help President Obama succeed in getting the Senate to ratify the New Start Treaty with Russia.

Sen. Kyl said the Senate should not consider the pact during the lame-duck session of Congress. President Obama has called passage of the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) his top foreign policy priority during the lame-duck session that began this week.

In what the Post describes as a “high-octane lobbying” campaign, Gates has already offered Kyl an extra $4 billion in spending on nuclear programs in exchange for his vote. This is on top of the existing $10 billion Administration pledge. This deal is bad policy and deplorable politics.
