Bureau of Labor Statistics spreadsheet shows the period of 1995-2010. The unemployment rates may shock you, or maybe not at all. The Republican period of control was: January 1995-December 2006. The Democrat period of control: January 2007-June 2010.

Stocks slid at the opening bell as investors’ already bleak view of the world economy worsened with another drop in the euro and the disappointing U.S. employment news. The Dow Jones industrial average fell more than 250 points in early afternoon trading.

The employment picture hasn’t changed much at all in the past six months despite all of the media spin. Initial jobless claims have been flat since the end of October, as this chart from Uncommon Misperceptions shows.

Michigan leads the nation with a 14.1 percent unemployment rate, followed by Nevada at 13.4 percent.

Had the stimulus not delayed the recovery, the unemployment rate would never have reached such a high rate in the first place.

California is likely to see modest job losses in the near term from its aggressive climate change policy due to higher energy costs and other factors, the state’s independent Legislative Analyst’s Office said.

In light of the U.S. economy’s historic sensitivity to high energy prices, an aggressive push toward green power would likely result in the net loss of millions of jobs.

So long as most people do not look beyond superficial appearances, politicians can get away with playing Santa Claus on all sorts of issues, while leaving havoc in their wake– such as growing unemployment, despite all the jobs being “created.”
