Sears selling porn?

Kmart bought Sears. Kmart sold porn through its Waldenbooks chain in the 90’s and faced pickets and boycotts from the American Family Association. In 2004 Kmart bought Sears and apparently Kmart’s porn friendly management came with the deal. Sears is now offering wall posters of nudes, group sex and other great ‘family’ decor.

The American Family Association web site is soliciting the public to email Sears to express their disgust.  Times are tough in the retailing business but you have to wonder if this is a wise move for a store like Sears that has a history of being a wholesome place to shop.

In an article by Conner Boyack, Pornography -The Dehumanization of Women, he notes that:

“Pornography and its usage serve no beneficial purpose; its only perceived advantage is the generation of large profits for those who produce and distribute it. In this sense, it is very much a drug; its peddlers rely upon its addictive nature to secure an income stream and ensure the customer returns for more.

At its core, pornography’s popularity relies upon the dehumanization of its subject, which is almost always a woman. She is treated not as a human being with character, intellect, kindness, and personality, but as a collection of anatomical components serving to induce a physiological response. The very essence of pornography is that of a false substitute—a cheap forgery whose attempt at imitation astonishingly deceives many.”

Mary Eberstadt at Stanford’s Hoover Institution calls pornography the “new tobacco” and said:

“Yesterday, smoking was considered unremarkable in a moral sense, whereas pornography was widely considered disgusting and wrong — including even by people who consumed it. Today, as a general rule, just the reverse is true. Now it is pornography that is widely (though not universally) said to be value-free, whereas smoking is widely considered disgusting and wrong — including even by many smokers.”

There is a youth oriented organization that is trying to change the way society looks at porn. The group called Fight the New Drug (FTND). That “New Drug” is pornography, and their approach parallels the fight against tobacco.

We wish them well.
