Republicans are poised to deliver a stinging defeat to Speaker Nancy Pelosi this Election Day, according to the latest polls and predictions.

EXCERPTS:

“They are widely expected to pick up around 50 seats, possibly more, which is more than enough to give the GOP control of the House.

The first polls to close may reveal how big the GOP wave will be. The races involving Democratic Reps. Glenn Nye (Va.), Paul Kanjorski (Pa.), John Hall (N.Y.), Tom Perriello (Va.) and Patrick Murphy (Pa.) were neck and neck in The Hill 2010 Midterm Election Poll.

Observers will also be watching to see if some big-name Democrats survive reelection. Reps. Barney Frank (Mass.), chairman of the Financial Services Committee, and John Dingell (Mich.), former head of the Energy and Commerce Committee, are both in unexpectedly tough races.

And, in Arizona, Rep. Raúl Grijalva, one of the most liberal members of the House, finds himself threatened by a 28-year-old rocket scientist-turned-political neophyte, whose campaign is run by her mother.

Any of these seats would be trophies for Republicans to crow about.”
