When angry drivel that barely passes as language but paints pretentious portraits of victimhood is held up as “poetry” by the First Lady of the United States of America, mustn’t the end be near?

Violence promoting rapper appropriatley known as "Common"

The Daily Caller reports that First Lady Michelle Obama has scheduled a poetry evening for May 11. One of Ms. Obama’s invited guests is Chicago rapper and “poet” Lonnie Rashid Lynn, Jr., commonly known as “Common.” Mr. Common counts among his works a selection titled, “A Letter to the Law.” Let’s enjoy Mr. Common’s uncommon talent.

Recapping some of the lines from Mr. Common’s “A Letter to the Law” is instructive. First we have:

Tell the law, my Uzi weighs a ton
I walk like a warrior,
from them I won’t run
On the streets, they try to beat us like a drum.
In Cincinnati, another brother hung
A guinea won’t see the sun
with his family stung

And then there are these rhythmic lines:

Stay true to what I do so the youth dream come
from project building
Seeing a fiend being hung
With that happening, why they messing with Saddam?
Burn a Bush cos’ for peace he no push no button
Killing over oil and grease
no weapons of destruction
How can we follow a leader when this a corrupt one

Please forgive the staggeringly atrocious punctuation and grammar. Mr. Common’s “poetry” was faithfully reproduced just as written.

Michelle Obama’s office did not return a Daily Caller reporter’s call requesting comments on Mr. Common’s material. So we have no way of knowing at this point how the First Lady feels about her poet’s call for the burning of a President of the United States.

When angry drivel that barely passes as language but paints pretentious portraits of victimhood is held up as “poetry” by the First Lady of the Unites States of America, mustn’t the end be near?
