A tough week for FARC terrorists

For the second time in a week the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) have suffered a great loss among its most important leaders.

According to Colombia’s Defense Minister Rodrigo Rivera, the head of security of “Alfonso Cano”, the top commander of the (FARC) was killed in fighting with the National Army of Colombia.

According to Rivera, Alirio Rojas Bocanegra, alias “El Abuelo” [the grandfather], was killed by Colombian Army troops in the town of Rioblanco, about 230 miles southwest of Bogota. El Abuelo llevaba más de 20 años en las filas de las FARC. Grandpa took more than 20 years in the ranks of the FARC.

Rivera added that El Abuelo commanded all guerrilla fronts that provide security to Guillermo León Sáenz, alias “Alfonso Cano”, the leader of the FARC since May 2008.

The note on the death of the leader’s security chief of the FARC came three days after the president of Colombia Juan Manuel Santos announced that one of the top commanders of the FARC, Guillermo Torres, alias Julian Conrado, “had been captured in Venezuela and would be extradited to Colombia.

It was a tough week for the FARC.

Santos has continued the policy of not giving respite to the FARC in Colombia and has already dealt many hard blows to the continent’s oldest guerrilla.  It has also reached an agreement with his Venezuelan counterpart Hugo Chavez for Venezuela not to allow the FARC to cross the border to seek respite or rest.

At this point it appears that both policies are working and the FARC who at one point were a feared force that dominated many parts of the country today is reduced to less than 8,000 armed guerrillas, mostly on defense or in retreat.

According to the AP, Torres is the most senior commander captured since 2004.  It is the second in command after the seven-member secretariat of the FARC.

The United States had offered $ 2.5 million for his capture.
