Bachmann – Romney tie in NJ and NC bodes well for conservatives in 2012

GOP voters are fleeing politics as usual as they get behind the defacto third party candidacy of Michele Bachmann. To many conservatives Romney represents another polished, slippery politician who will say or do anything to get elected. While Bachmann is in a virtual dead heat with Romney at 23-22, the more conservative candidates garner a total of 58% of the votes.

What I call the no-Mitt vote is comprised of supporters for Bachmann, Perry, Cain, Paul and Pawlenty. These voters will eventually coalesce around a true conservative like Bachamann or Perry.  Romney, Gingrich and Huntsman represent the failed old guard liberal Republicans that want the fame and power that comes with holding office more than they want to save the Republic. Together they only have 31% of the GOP vote.

Nationally, Bachmann has gained on Romney as she gets more exposure and the voters get to know her down to earth common sense manner backed up by her business and political experience and law degree. She scares the left to death as do most real conservatives. While a broad field of conservative candidates dilutes Bachmann’s vote totals, it is clear that the majority want a real conservative instead of a Romney.
