It’s not “progress” to merely repeat what has always ended in disaster. The road less traveled is freedom, in economics as much as anywhere.

When it comes to the economy, government may seize, transfer, redistribute, “invest” or otherwise “spread” human productive energy (in the form of money or goods) around in whatever way it chooses; but it’s all about forcing the redistribution of already existing goods and property, not about creating it.

In declaring independence from Great Britain, the founders complained that the British government “has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people, and eat out their substance.” “Swarms” sounds like an accurate characterization of the present American regulatory state run amuck.

The Labour Charter of 1927 – promulgated by Italy’s Grand Council of Fascism under Mussolini – is a guiding document of this doctrine and provides for government-based economic management. This same document recommends government provision of healthcare and unemployment insurance. Sound familiar?

Reward your friends with the people’s money, intimidate and denigrate your opposition, and use the power of government at every level to advance your own agenda, punish your enemies and protect your lies.

There is a flag flying over Washington and it’s no longer the stars and stripes, but the same red flag that flies over Chicago. It’s the red flag under whose shade misery and tyranny spreads while the band strikes up the same anthem over and over again. “Happy days are here again.”

If the government’s seizure of journalist files and the use of the IRS to harass individuals “unfriendly to the King” does not reawaken a new generation of Americans, then I cannot imagine what will. If Americans are not prepared to defend the principle of individual rights in the arena of First Amendment rights, then there will—very shortly—be nothing left to defend at all.

IRS admits that in recent years it has zeroed in on organizations with “tea party” or “patriot” in their names. Further, The Wall Street Journal reports the IRS has also targeted groups that say they are “worried about government spending, debt or taxes, and even ones that lobbied to ‘make America a better place to live.’”
