In Marxism, great emphasis is placed on use of unions to advance socialism. French historian of labor Michel Collinet claims… “The control of labor unions was, and still remains, the principle objective of Communist parties in industrialized countries.”

City governments nationwide are bleeding red ink, largely due to the salaries and benefits their unionized employees are paid. With high unemployment, falling property values and sinking tax revenues, these salaries and benefits can’t be sustained.

As U.S. Sen. Patty Murray put it on the floor of the Senate last week: “That means 3,000 teachers in Washington state who are right now in limbo, who are spending this summer not knowing if they’ll return to a classroom or a pink slip in the fall.” Problem is, there aren’t 3,000 teachers in Washington state facing layoffs. This is the latest example, particularly illustrative, showing that Washington is less and less about ideas and values, and more and more about interests, power, and money. Public sector jobs have held fairly steady while private sector employment has collapsed. Pelosi and the Democrats just piled another $10 billion debt on to the private sector to support public sector jobs in return for vast campaign contributions filtered through union dues.

Voters’ focus on spending forced Democrats to make a telling choice this week — between public unions and folks on food stamps. Guess who they picked? All this money going to public employee union members thrills labor unions. The Hill newspaper reports that unions plan a massive campaign for Democrats as a reward for this new spending. As soon as the new spending is passed, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka promises: “We will do the most intensive on-the-ground education program that we have done in a number of years.”

In a cynical ploy to evade accountability for the Democrats’ continued fiscal recklessness, Pelosi accused opponents of the $26 billion public-employee-union-bailout bill of “demeaning” teachers — and nurses, police officers, and firefighters. – Michelle Malkin at NRO
