What, then, might happen to America? Considering the current economic situation, some kind of collapse is of course possible. Most likely the United States will change into something else, into a “soft” totalitarian society envisioned by Alexis de Tocqueville, where its citizens are “cared for” but weighted down by mountains of rules and bereft of any dynamism, creativity, or imagination—subservient, socialist, and senile.

It will confer upon the executive branch and the military the permanent authority to snatch and grab any person, U.S. citizens included, whom they decree to be a “terrorist” — as defined or not by the executive or the military — and imprison him indefinitely, without formal charge, presentation of evidence or judicial proceeding of any kind. These “detainees” will have neither civilian rights in the civil court system nor — crucially — even the minimal rights to due process and decent treatment conferred upon prisoners of war. (And we are allegedly “at war,” are we not?)

So many seem to focus on America’s faults and not her beauty, resilience, courage, generosity and sacrifice.

Because I am a Latino, most people automatically assume that I am either a liberal or a Democrat, or both. The ironic reality in Texas and the rest of the once-solid South is that it was the Democratic Party that was full of rich, old, racist white men.

G-20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors asked the United States, the IMF’s largest contributor, for a whopping $108 billion to rescue bankers around the world and the Obama Administration quickly obliged. The Democrat Congress, aided by a few Republicans, used a war spending bill to send bailout money to an international fund that’s partially-controlled by our enemies.

It will be nearly impossible for grassroots parents and community members to effect change when problems arise. This will implement the real goal which is a “national curriculum” which pushes a particular ideological and political agenda.
