It is passing strange for federal officials, including the president, to accuse Arizona of irresponsibility while the federal government is refusing to fulfill its responsibility to control the nation’s borders. Such control is an essential attribute of national sovereignty.

Arizona lawmakers, led by state Sen. Russell Pearce, have once again shown courage and boldness in their efforts to protect their citizens from the brutal consequences of an open border. Their latest measure is so tough and effective against illegal immigration that, if it is upheld in the courts, it could be the beginning of the end of massive illegal immigration in this country.

In the absence of any real border enforcement by the federal government, Arizona rightfully took matters into their own hands and passed a law that whereby Arizona cops can demand to see immigration papers from people they stop.
Good for Arizona. Other states, especially border states, should follow their lead.

A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey finds that 60% of voters nationwide favor such a law, while 31% are opposed.

In a tough primary fight in Arizona, McCain talks tough on immigration. McCain, who endorsed the tough new Arizona law earlier this week, defended it as necessary because of the federal government’s inability to secure the border.

The immigration movement is one of the two mass mobilizations in American politics now. The other is the “tea party” movement. Unlike the tea party activists, these groups have Mr. Obama’s ear.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signed into law the nation’s toughest legislation against illegal immigration Friday, a sweeping measure that supporters said would take handcuffs off police but which President Barack Obama said could violate people’s civil rights.

“The reality is that if you place land and endangered species as a higher priority [than] border security, you get neither of those,” Rep. Bishop said.

Independent surveys indicate he is running behind lesser-known Republicans and is battered by the state’s double-digit unemployment and record bankruptcies. In Nevada, 26 percent of the population is Hispanic, according to the census.
