Has anyone actually read the law? Contrary to the talk, it is a reasonable, limited, carefully-crafted measure designed to help law enforcement deal with a serious problem in Arizona. Its authors anticipated criticism and went to great lengths to make sure it is constitutional and will hold up in court. It is the criticism of the law that is over the top, not the law itself.

Is common sense trying to get a foothold in Washington DC? don’t count on it.

In a tough primary fight in Arizona, McCain talks tough on immigration. McCain, who endorsed the tough new Arizona law earlier this week, defended it as necessary because of the federal government’s inability to secure the border.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signed into law the nation’s toughest legislation against illegal immigration Friday, a sweeping measure that supporters said would take handcuffs off police but which President Barack Obama said could violate people’s civil rights.

Hence, legalization could have the effect of making these criminals into “legitimate” businessmen. “Big Marijuana” could join “Big Pharma” as another powerful special interest group. In order to be consistent, “Big Cocaine” and “Big Meth” would have to follow.
