They thought liberty was as much at risk from threats within our borders as from outside, and French political thinker and historian Alexis de Tocqueville agreed with that warning.

We’ve allowed our universities to become politically correct, our media to become juvenile, and our entertainments to become ever-more adolescent—and then we wonder why we’re baffled by the difficulties we have as a society in being candid, serious, and grown up. As C.S. Lewis put it, “We make men without chests and expect from them virtue and enterprise. We laugh at honor and are shocked to find traitors in our midst.”

Trillion dollar bills that crush the economy and lose jobs are becoming all to commonplace. McConnell asks for reason but his appeal seems to be falling on deaf ears.

With the single stroke of a pen, President Barack Obama signed the Dodd-Frank financial regulation bill that set in motion 243 new formal rule-makings by 11 different federal agencies. Each of the 243 rule-makings will employ hundreds of banking lobbyists as they try to shape what the final actual laws will look like. And when the rules are finally written, thousands of lawyers will bill millions of hours as the richest incumbent financial firms that caused the last crisis figure out how to game the new system.

The word ‘uncertainty’ keeps coming up as a reason why businesses don’t invest and take risk to create jobs. We have two 2,000 plus page bills now that we had to pass ‘to see what they do’. They each create hundreds of new agencies and will generate thousands of new rules, regulation and unknown costs.

The one thing is simply that BHO has constructed an environment of fear — fear built up gradually over the last 18 months (24 months, if you count the final stretch of campaign ’08) that is quite obvious if you assemble the jigsaw puzzle pieces left by The One and key players in his regime. What results is a “disturbingly coherent picture” of the America to which Chairman Zero aspires.

The financial reform bill expected to clear Congress this week is chock-full of provisions that have little to do with the financial crisis but cater to the long-standing agendas of labor unions and other Democratic interest groups.
