This month, VH1 debuted a new reality show starring Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas of TLC fame–the all girls hip-hop group very popular in the early 90’s. While talking to a therapist on the show, Chilli opens up about the circumstances which led her to choose abortion at the age of 20, and the subsequent pain and hurt she has felt ever since.

Chilli’s says she felt forced to choose abortion because she was scared and alone, and at the very beginning of her career–she’s not alone. 64% of American women felt pressured by others to choose abortion and an even higher number of women–79% say they were not told about available alternatives.

What else is not unique? Chilli’s suffering went on for years after she ended the life of her child–common for those with post-abortive stress syndrome. She says:

“It broke my spirit…I became…not my strong self anymore. I gave in and I broke to something someone else wanted. I would breakdown and just cry…because I wasn’t a mommy. I cried everyday for almost 9 years.”

There is just no arguing with a woman who has been there. Chilli lays all her pain on the table for VH1 viewers to see, while even thousands more women share their stories everyday through organizations like Operation Outcry, and Silent No More.
