For years the United States has been a world leader in economic freedom. But runaway government spending and burdensome regulations have caused a decline in economic freedom in the United States. If our economic freedom continues to fall, how will it affect our quality of life?

Morally there is no difference between an environmentalist who bans DDT at the price of millions of malaria deaths, the Unabomber who selects his victims personally, the anarchist who smashes store windows and dreams of smashing structural steel, and a terrorist who rides a passenger plane into the World Trade Center. Each glories in destruction for its own sake, and each advocates death as the epitome of that destruction. It is no accident that they are all defined in terms of “anti-something.”

With a history lesson on freedom and liberty Rep. Allen West spoke at a 9/11 memorial. “People attacked America and they attacked the American ideal. They attacked us for our way of life, for our liberty, for our freedom. And that is why they chose to attack places where every day Americans went to work. Because what we must understand is that America is not a geographic location. America is an ideal that exists within the hearts and minds of each and every one of us.”

The American people are handing the U.S. over to China — not to the Chinese government, but to the Chinese system of economic fascism. It’s not through deliberate intention, but by default. By giving government more and more power in the name of “security,” our government has become as fascist as the Chinese government.

Capitalism is the system of no economic policy other than government stays out of the way. When you leave everyone free, the best, brightest and most productive are free to prosper as well. The most prosperous tend to bring everyone along with them, without any hint of self-sacrifice on anyone’s part.

Because statists are convinced they’re free, they inevitably blame the economic woes on freedom and free enterprise rather than on the government’s socialistic redistributive programs and its interventionist economic policies. Thus, statists call on the government to move further along the spectrum toward more government control over economic activity and wealth.

This year’s election for the U.N. Human Rights Council has, once again, produced a body that has fewer “free” countries – 21 of a total of 47 – and has more than one-third of the seats held by members of the Islamic bloc.
