Labor unions often flood the radio, television and mailboxes with their messages in hopes of swaying public opinion.

The word ‘uncertainty’ keeps coming up as a reason why businesses don’t invest and take risk to create jobs. We have two 2,000 plus page bills now that we had to pass ‘to see what they do’. They each create hundreds of new agencies and will generate thousands of new rules, regulation and unknown costs.

Unions spent $400 million during the 2008 elections in support of Democratic candidates, and Barack Obama has been grateful. Obama is making union dreams come true.

The AFL-CIO on Monday began distributing more than 300,000 political fliers to members at 164 worksites in 23 states. Two unions have promised to spend $100 million to protect incumbent Democrats. That should be reason enough to vote them out.

We now live in the Unionized States of America — a phrase that evokes how Obama and company have gone into overdrive to empower their union allies at our expense. Lee O’Hanian, a professor of economics at UCLA, weighs in at the Wall Street Journal on the dire economic implications of this tectonic shift in government policy, noting that employment figures remain very weak:

Major clashes are breaking out between public-sector unions and state and local governments seeking to steady their wobbly books by scaling back employee benefits, pitting labor’s political clout against lawmakers eager to avoid raising taxes or cutting programs.

A remarkably bad piece of legislation — the Public Safety Employer-Employee Cooperation Act — threatens to tighten that stranglehold, imposing the unionization of public-safety workers in the 21 states that currently do not extend that privilege.
