Once government undertakes to tax income, it acquires even more power through its authority to define “income,” “taxable income,” subsidiary terms, and the rules of exemption. There is no escape from arbitrariness and caprice.

Senator Ted Cruz says the recent IRS criminal discrimination against conservative groups for political reasons shows it is time to eliminate the IRS. This is the change people voted for.

Years of misbehavior, favoritism and outright criminal acts produced a view of government officials that ranks below that of used-car salesmen. No other group or institution is held in lower esteem.

If the government’s seizure of journalist files and the use of the IRS to harass individuals “unfriendly to the King” does not reawaken a new generation of Americans, then I cannot imagine what will. If Americans are not prepared to defend the principle of individual rights in the arena of First Amendment rights, then there will—very shortly—be nothing left to defend at all.

IRS admits that in recent years it has zeroed in on organizations with “tea party” or “patriot” in their names. Further, The Wall Street Journal reports the IRS has also targeted groups that say they are “worried about government spending, debt or taxes, and even ones that lobbied to ‘make America a better place to live.’”

IRS agent said “you’re political” because you “criticized President Obama, who was a candidate.” Family Talk Action is “not educational” because it does not present all views. Sounded like a “partisan right-wing group” because, according to the IRS, it only presents conservative viewpoints.

IRS scandal could well be an abuse of power by the executive branch, reflecting one of the issues that was an article of impeachment drawn up for then-President Richard Nixon, before he resigned.

He “has no interest in playing by corrupt Washington rules” …. beginning to make a reputation by not going along to get along.

I sense an overall feeling of burnout and defeatism. I know it is there because I’ve struggled with it myself.

Liz Cheney was on Happening Now this morning to discuss her editorial in the Wall Street Journal where she called Barack Obama the most radical president in history. Cheney said, “My point in this oped was to say, “Wait a second!” When you have a president who’s embarked on such a dangerous path, whether you want to talk about domestic policy, ignoring the debt, trying to trample on our Second Amendment rights, on our religious freedom, national security, weakening this nation… Across the board his policies are so dangerous that it is not obstructionism to block them, I think, it is indeed patriotism.” – Jim Hoft
