Voters’ focus on spending forced Democrats to make a telling choice this week — between public unions and folks on food stamps. Guess who they picked? All this money going to public employee union members thrills labor unions. The Hill newspaper reports that unions plan a massive campaign for Democrats as a reward for this new spending. As soon as the new spending is passed, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka promises: “We will do the most intensive on-the-ground education program that we have done in a number of years.”

In a cynical ploy to evade accountability for the Democrats’ continued fiscal recklessness, Pelosi accused opponents of the $26 billion public-employee-union-bailout bill of “demeaning” teachers — and nurses, police officers, and firefighters. – Michelle Malkin at NRO

Arizona’s Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tom Horne, says the basic theme of the Mexican-American studies program is that Latino students “were and continue to be victims of a racist American society driven by the interests of middle- and upper-class whites.” Among the goals listed for the Mexican-American Studies are “social justice” and “Latino Critical Race Pedagogy.” Pictures of the classroom showed the walls decorated with “heroes,” such as Fidel Castro and Che Guevara.

Democrats on Capitol Hill are literally taking food out of the mouths of the most needy to pay back their political cronies. For public employee unions, this is payback for their extensive support of Democratic politicians.

A little over a year ago, I wrote a column suggesting that due to the blatant hostility the National Education Association was expressing towards Christians, it was time for Christian teachers to withdraw their membership from the NEA. As it turns out, the focus of my call to abandon this radically left lobby group was a bit too narrow.
