It’s no secret that the Russians do not want the United States or her allies to be protected by missile defense, and believe that New START forbids further development of missile defense.

The media are pushing hard to help President Obama succeed in getting the Senate to ratify the New Start Treaty with Russia.

“New START suffers from fundamental flaws that no amount of tinkering around the edges can fix. I believe the better course for our nation, and for global stability, is to put this treaty aside and replace it with a better one,” Sen. Christopher S. Bond, Missouri Republican, said in a little-noticed floor statement last week.

Realizing that his START treaty has too many flaws to pass a reasonable examination Obama pulls out the stops and announces it as a priority for the lame duck congress where he hopes loyal Democrats will ignore the serious issues.

A push to ratify a flawed and dangerous arms limitation treaty to give the president a foreign policy legacy may only succeed in writing our epitaph, leaving our defenses neutered and our enemies emboldened.

Obama hinted at one of his lame duck goals in his post election posturing speech. Calling it an issue of ‘national security’ he said the START treaty should be approved by the lame duck senate.

The previous rhetoric of the administration—against new warheads, against the Reliable Replacement Warhead, against testing of warheads—unsettles members of the Senate worried that when push comes to shove the administration will go the direction of the disarmament lobby and the louder voices for global zero.
